ABOUT WHO WE ARE:
The Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ), wile founded on American soil in the early 1800s,
in uniquely equipped to live up to its identity that it is a
“movement for wholeness in a fragmented world”.
The denomination was born in the 1800s, and continues to be
influenced by its founding ideals of our unity in Christ with
openness and diversity in practice and belief.
The Vision of the Christian Church (DOC): To be a faithful, growing church, that demonstrates true community, deep Christian spirituality and a passion for justice (Micah 6:8).
The Mission of the Christian Church (DOC): To be and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, witnessing, loving and serving from our doorsteps “to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).
The Confession of the Christian Church (DOC): As members of the Christian church, we confess that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, and proclaim him Lord and Savior of the world.
The church is identified with the Protestant “mainstream” and is widely involved in social and other concerns. Disciples have supported vigorously world and national programs of education, agricultural assistance, racial reconciliation, care of the developmentally disabled and aid to victims of war and calamity.

P A S T O R ' S S P O T
April 22 is on the calendar as
Earth Day, which is a secular observance and Earth
Stewardship Day is on my church planning calendar for April
29. Both are worth calling attention to and giving
encouragement for a thoughtful reflection.
Earth Day was first observed in the United States in 1970, so it is a very young holiday as holidays go. Earth Day is now observed and celebrated worldwide as a time to focus on conservation and preservation of the world’s natural resources. Earth Day celebrations often feature educational programs and community activities such as cleaning up public parks and roadsides, and encouragement for people to participate in public recycling efforts. As stewards of God’s gifts, we are called to take care of God’s creation.
Writers of the Biblical stories felt that creation of the earth was important enough that they put two different creation stories in the first two chapters of Genesis. The first story emphasizes the creation of the earth in a “week-long” creative process. Day one featured light from darkness and day from night. Day two was about dry land and the seas. The third day featured vegetation with plants and all kinds of trees. On the fourth day God created the sun and the moon and stars. Living creatures was the work of day five and six, including humankind. And on the seventh day God rested and admired and blessed what had been created.
After each day the writer of the creation story says, “And God saw that it was good.”
The second creation story has more of a primary focus on the creation of Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden and with the humans being given dominion over all that was created. Humans were charged from the beginning to be caretakers or stewards of God’s creation.
So Earth Day and Earth Stewardship Day has deep roots and is important as a theological concept. What do you do to help preserve and care for this fragile home which God has given to us to live in, to care for and ultimately be responsible for? Have you given this any thought? Have you prayed about being a good steward?
The earth is much more than a place from which we harvest what we want and give little thought to the long-term health of our planet. We are responsible for taking care of it.
We are Stewards as well as Benefactors.
God Bless!

SECRETS OF THE KINGDOM
THE PARABLES OF JESUS
The 2012 Summer Camp Program
Guide for the Christian Church (DOC) in IL-WI is shown on
page 4 of this newsletter. Many will tell that they met
Christ at a church youth camp. We want every child to have a
meaningful experience at a camp. It is a vital ministry which
enables our youth to tell their story and to share their
experience and their faith.
This year’s camping theme is “Secrets of the Kingdom—The Parables of Jesus”. We urge our young people to consider signing up for one of our camps this summer.
The church has Kimler Youth Funds to help defray the cost of a camp. Please see Rev. Foland if you are interested in registering. Please see him this week!!!
***Early registration deadline
for all camps must be postmarked by April 15, 2012
****Late registration deadline for all camps must be postmarked by May 15, 2012

CHURCH PHOTO DIRECTORY
APRIL 24, 25 and 26
It’s not too late to be a part of our new family directory program–-we need YOU to make our new family album complete! You do not have to be a church member to participate in this pictorial directory. When you have your picture taken for the directory, you will receive a free 8 x 10 photo and a free church directory—just for showing up with a smile!
Monill and Marcia will be available before and after church this Sunday to schedule your appointment for your photo. Pictures will be taken between 2:30 and 8:50 pm on Tuesday-Thursday, April 24-26.
If you are not able to have your picture taken at this time, you can submit a photo to put in the directory. See Monill or Marcia about obtaining copyright release for the photo.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
LOOKING AHEAD: MAY 2012
May is the month for First
Christian to help at Loaves & Fishes. Our duties include,
but are not limited to, daily stocking of shelves so the
volunteers will be able to easily grab items and sack them up
for those who come in.
A sign-up sheet is posted on the Parlor bulletin board. Timing is somewhat flexible; two or three people can accomplish the task in an hour or less. Please think about your personal schedule and volunteer to help at Loaves & Fishes in May in the name of FCC.

REGIONAL ASSEMBLY
WHEN: October 12-13, 2012
WHERE: Marriott Hotel & Convention Center, Normal, IL
Please mark this date on your calendars. We will be sharing more about this Assembly time in future newsletters.
The Regional Assembly is a meeting that all church members should be interested in attending. The Assembly always brings us up-to-date on what is going on in the Region, how our sister churches are doing, and gives us an opportunity to meet other Disciples from across the state.
We are looking for volunteers to be delegates to this Assembly. If you are interested, please see Rev. Foland or Mike Drake.

MOWING HELP NEEDED
It’s that time again! The
church yard needs to be mowed! If you could take a turn for a
week, or two, or a month, please sign up on the sheet on the
parlor bulletin board. If many would take a turn, the task
would be easier for everyone
HELP WITH CHURCH SIGN NEEDED
Volunteers are still needed in
May and June to update the church sign each week. Would you
consider accepting this chore for a month?
