Program - Provost Kenneth Hawkinson, WIU    Dr. Hawkinson talked about himself and his background.  He came to WIU from Chicago as an undergrad.  Funded his education by using an ROTC Scholarship after getting out of community college.  He did a bachelors and Masters both at WIU and got his PhD at SIU-C.  Served in the Peace Corps and then came to WIU in 1988.

Challenges facing WIU –

Budget – The state currently owes WIU $31 million. For FY 13.  Budgets have already been reduced over the past few years.  We are currently doing OK  at being fiscally responsible.  Working hard @ keeping enrollment up, but hard when costs are going up and aid is down.  The gap is widening.

WIU recently started the WIU Commitment Scholarship that is awarded automatically based on ACT.

The recession has been so long that more students are starting at community colleges rather than 4 year institutions.  We are working with Spoon River College so not only do their credits pass to us, but our pass to them so a student can get an associate degree.  There are increased mandates from the State.  WIU has started a mentorship program to increase retention.

Looking to the future, they are waiting for funds to be released to start construction on the Performing Arts Center.  They hope this will be Spring 2013.  The President has given more money for campus beautification and they are also looking at a visitors center.
